Onco Surgery is the specialty of Oncology, which deals with cancer, particularly malignant tumors; it specifically focuses on the management of malignant tumors, especially those with metastasized tumors. It is usually divided into three subspecialties namely – Oncology of Colon and Rectal Cancer, Oncology of Breast Cancer and Oncology of Prostate Cancer.
Oncology of Colon and Rectal Cancer: Oncologists focus on colon and rectal cancers because of the large number of people who develop this type of cancer, especially in men. This type of cancer is highly aggressive in nature and can lead to life-threatening complications in patients. This disease is considered to be the second leading cause of death worldwide and accounts for about 4% of all cancers. Patients with this form of cancer are typically those with renal failure and it often occurs at a very early stage of the cancer process. Oncologists generally deal with patients with this kind of cancer.
Oncology of Breast Cancer: Oncologists specialize in treating women who have undergone breast cancer. This cancer is not as aggressive as colon cancer but it still involves a lot of risk and complexity. Breast cancer has become the most common type of cancer among young women in the US. It affects about four thousand women in the United States each year and many more die from this form of cancer every year.
Oncology of Prostate Cancer: Oncologists deal with patients who have developed prostate cancer, which can be diagnosed at an earlier stage than the other two forms. Prostate cancer is highly aggressive and affects the prostate gland. Prostate cancer is also known to be one of the most common types of cancer, especially among men. Prostate cancer is more common among men who are obese than men who are underweight.
Most commonly, people with prostate cancer are those who have had their prostate removed through surgery or radiation therapy and men who have been exposed to radiation in the past. However, there are also many men who have developed the disease who do not have any signs of this type of cancer. These are called as undiagnosed prostate cancers.
Oncology is basically a medical treatment of cancer by the use of non-invasive techniques. The treatment focuses mainly on preventing the spread of cancer cells, enhancing the effectiveness of chemotherapy and reducing the duration of the cancer. This form of treatment is also done to reduce the size and extent of the tumor. Patients undergoing onco surgery undergo different kinds of treatments depending on the type and stage of cancer.
